Artist Talk
Helena Kauppila in conversation with Mika Hannula
Wednesday, September 6, 6:30 pm

“Molecular Movements” was a small introductory happening at the opening reception. In it I shared some of the science stories and color ideas behind my paintings. Abstract painting for me is about creating a place of strength and openness. Through chemistry experiments, I wanted to make the unseen seen.

I wanted to let the audience participate in some color magic, which they were able to do after the performance.

Opening Reception Wednesday, August 30, 7 pm
Introductory remarks by the artist 19:30 – 19:40

SYSTEMS SYMPHONY dives into Kauppila's variety of color and systems explorations.  We see the interplay between intuition and her background in mathematics–Kauppila holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University.

"One and one is two–that's business. One and one is four–that's art–or if you like it better–is life."
–Josef Albers

That the total is more than the sum of the parts is true in many group activities as it is in certain color compositions.  Informed by how mathematics underlies form, Kauppila’s work embraces this complexity and invites our attention without demanding it.  Combining ideas from probability theory with explorations of the physicality of painting and the relationality of color perception, Kauppila creates worlds where color can be experienced in a multitude of rhythms.  Science references create symbolic as well as aesthetic links with contemporary themes and add possibilities to broaden the audience's interpretation and meaning.
