2022 A.D.
Science gives a philosophical focus to my work and a chance to include the genuinely other. 2022 A.D. grew out of a period when I was dancing outdoors every morning. I knew that foxes lived in the park, although we rarely occupied the same space at the same time. Learning that traces of DNA from animals can be detected in the air gave me a new way to think about our physical connection and the space we shared.
The painting brings together the colors of my own experience in the park with part of a fox gene. I built the surface from individual blobs of paint, varying roughly around the scale of the letters, and then finger-painted the genetic sequence on top. The whole painting had to be completed in one session, making the process intensely physical.
