What is life and what is non-life? And what is the difference between acting with purpose and simply happening? 4 Billion B.C. looks toward the chemical systems that preceded and underlie life. Electrochemical gradients can drive processes in a particular direction, much as gravity can set a rock rolling downhill. The painting imagines this world of chemical motion at the foundations of life.
