Evening Clouds
Did you know your eyes do more than help you see? Below the rods and cones, the cells responsible for color vision, in the inner retina lies another type of light-sensitive cell: the intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs). These cells don’t form images. Instead, they respond to light—its color and intensity—to regulate our circadian rhythm and influence mood.You may have noticed this in daily life: when you use an app to reduce blue light on your computer in the evening, your ipRGCs receive a clearer signal that it’s getting late—helping your body wind down for sleep. Evening Clouds is a painting about a particularly stunning evening light. It was spring in full swing, but the leaves weren’t yet large enough to fill the tree, so the clouds and branches mixed in a dreamy way.
