Flight of the Butterfly

Direct experiences in nature are an important part of my painting process, whether in parks, forests, or oceans. Flight of the Butterfly grew out of summer light and the softness of watching butterflies move through the meadow in front of my studio.

Although the painting looks simple, it took about three weeks to make. I added one region of color at a time, scrubbing each down to create transparency and then leaving it untouched. This was the first painting in which I found the distribution of forms intuitively, without using mathematics to guide the composition.
