Horizons

Color layering is something I have developed through repeated exploration. Building a complex color surface takes time: each new layer changes the relationships between the colors already there. The Horizons series explored color through layered horizontal lines, inspired by the sea dissolving into sky. These simple structures allowed subtle color relationships to emerge slowly, over days and weeks. At the time, I worked on these small paintings alongside larger, more open compositions. The repeated horizontal structure gave me a framework in which to concentrate on color layering and arrangement.
