LUCA
What is life and non-life? How did life first arise? How is life connected? Origins-of-life research fascinates me because these questions bring together people from many different fields, and scientific questions quickly open onto philosophical ones. Today, as AI changes how we think about intelligence and agency, these questions feel especially relevant.
LUCA refers to the Last Universal Common Ancestor, a way of looking far back into the shared history of life through characteristics that living organisms still have in common today. The piece encodes one gene associated with LUCA through the colors and orientations of the triangles, with each triangle representing one codon. I made this ceramic work during an artist residency in Istanbul, where I had the opportunity to visit the İznik Foundation and work with their colors, kilns, and expertise.
