Magnolia Tree

In my art, I focus on how we connect at the micro, macro, and universal scales. The letters A, T, G, and C refer to the four nucleobases that make up DNA. These same four components form the genetic code of all life on Earth. It amazes me how much diversity can arise from just four elements.

Magnolia Tree brings together two ways of encountering a tree. The colors grew out of the direct experience of seeing a magnolia tree against a thunderous sky, while the letters introduce genetic information—in this case, part of a carbon-assimilation gene associated with LUCA, the Last Universal Common Ancestor. The genetic sequence gives the painting a structure that allows me to distill the experience of color: the colors are about the being of the tree, while the genetic sequence points toward one of the processes taking place within it.
