Spring!
Spring! grew out of the transition from winter to spring, beginning with my sudden awareness of yellow in the ambient light. I seem to return to spring every year in my paintings, but each year the experience—and the paintings that follow—is different.
Spring! marked a breakthrough for me in bringing my Complex Systems series into a small format. At times, I used the entire floor of my studio while making it, allowing the painting to emerge from larger movements rather than simply making a large painting smaller. The small scale also allowed me to respond quickly to a season in rapid transition.
