Spring (ATPase Subunit I)

In my DNA and Origin Stories series, science forms part of the structure, while intuition, movement, and experiences in the present moment give the paintings their complex form and color. This allows intellectual and physical ways of experiencing the world to coexist within the same work.

Spring (ATPase Subunit I) brings together two kinds of energy. The painting grew out of the physical experience of spring, with layers of bright color accumulating across a thick impasto surface. Within this apparent chaos is a hint of order: the painting encodes a gene associated with LUCA and involved in the production of ATP, the primary energy-carrying molecule in cells. The energy of spring is reflected in a structure connected to the energy of life.
