Tiergarten in the Spring

The science of complex systems turns our attention to the interplay between the individual and the whole. In my paintings, I work with simple elements that, when combined, create complex color spaces. These elements resist traditional figure–ground relationships; instead, they evoke the statistical properties of a scene, where meaning emerges from patterns rather than hierarchy.

Tiergarten in the Spring grew out of repeated walks through the park while I was developing a commissioned painting this winter and spring. I often stopped to climb a giant section of a fallen tree trunk that has been left in the park, then continued along the paths beside the meandering waterways. Tiergarten is large enough to walk at length, and over time, distance and the space of the park became more important to the painting than the details of individual trees or leaves.
