Timeplace
There’s a real mystery to how something new comes into being. The first time I truly grappled with this was while working on my Ph.D. in mathematics. There was no obvious path forward, and what surprised me most was how much seemingly unrelated things mattered. A walk outside often did more than hours at the desk. Since then, a physical practice has always accompanied my creative work.
When I made Timeplace, I was dancing every morning, sometimes making elaborate costumes to shift how I moved and thought. The technique was sparked by seeing works by Cecily Brown: I thought she had first colored the paper with watercolor and then drawn over it with chalk pastel. I immediately saw possibilities in this combination and began a series of small works on uniquely colored watercolor grounds. Timeplace explores movement and physicality as part of the experience of being.
