Two Weathers
Did you know that trees use color to assess competition? Trees can assess how far they are from the canopy by comparing the relative amounts of red and far-red light. They can also distinguish whether they are in the shadow of a living competitor or of a fixed object like a rock, all from the distribution of colors! The interaction of trees with light have inspired so many of my paintings. Two Weathers, for example, traces broadly the energies that arise in tree-filled spaces between January and May. In the winter I slowly built colors, as the sky was very fresh and not yet too bright to look at directly. In April and May, as the body had started to thaw and feel the flexibility of summer, more bolder strokes, brushes in motion, became a part of the work.
