Urban Light
The balance between conscious and subconscious perception has always fascinated me—and it shapes how I make art. I’m interested in the emotional qualities of an experience and the quieter, behind-the-scenes ways it stays with us. Painting is a way for me to understand more about this hidden awareness.
Urban Light grew out of a few days I spent in Tel Aviv. I was struck by the beauty of the light and came away with a happy impression of the city, but I wasn't consciously studying what had created it. Much later, back in my studio in New York, I was buying plants at the market for my own balcony when it suddenly became clear to me how to translate this experience onto a canvas. The plants spilling from people’s balconies had been the hidden ingredient, shaping my experience of the urban light into something playful and joyful.
