Parks

These works arose out of a practice of drawing when I first arrived in Berlin. At the time I also started a practice of taking a walk in the park with my morning coffee. The first park that I lived across from was Fennpfuhl park in Lichtenberg where I stayed for three months in an artist residency while looking for my own apartment. Weisser See was near my first Berlin studio, and Volkspark Humboldthain and Brunnenplatz were the two parks near what then was my first apartment in Berlin, Wedding. The last piece in the series is an imagined park, it uses the elements I discovered while reflecting on the real parks.

Close Encounters

These smaller works arose after some time walking in parks regularly and making the larger work. While the large park drawings were made in the studio, these small works were drawn on location. Hence they are more figurative in the usual visual sense. That said, all of the themes were ones that I had repeatedly encountered, and despite some efforts, I was not able to extend this series to just any plant. Each of these works is both a specific encounter and an example of a reoccurring one, and it is this aspect of familiarity through repetition that I drew on to make these works.
