The Power of Sunrise
I love experiencing sunrise; being up at this time feels like a battery charging. At this time, elements appear individually. Suddenly a certain plant becomes visible, or the color of the sky shifts. It is a very dynamic time. Sunrise is a powerful time of day. My new series is all about this special time, both intuitively and intellectually.
Symphony in a Park
The large-scale painting Symphony in a Park (2021), 320 x 465 cm, oil on linen, is inspired by birdsong in the spring, early in the morning, when the birds compete for attention from all sides and across different frequencies. Many visitors to my studio, however, first think of a city when they see this painting. I find this interpretation fitting and assume that what people imagine is a vibrant city—a city that has grown from countless individual contributions. In this way, a city resembles the park with birds: it is a complex system, where the whole is more than the sum of its parts. Begun in 2016, this work marks my first sustained engagement with sunrise as a moment of rising intensity and layered emergence.
Light Layers
Forests and other natural systems are often described as healing. I am interested in whether this effect relates to an experience of complexity, sensed through vision, smell, sound, touch, and proprioception. In my Sunrise and Light Layers series, I focus on light within these conditions, creating work that brings the complexity of large natural systems indoors.
